ISAAC EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL ON DOMINICA…..TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXPECTED SOON  

 

At 8am the centre of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 15.2 degrees north and longitude 60.9 degrees west or about 25 miles east of Dominica. Isaac is moving west at 21 mph (33 km/h). Maximum sustained winds remain near 45mph or 75km/h with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend out to 160 miles (260km) from the centre.

 

Isaac’s centre has dropped further south and on the current forecast track, Isaac is expected to make landfall on Dominica later this morning, with tropical storm force winds (40-50 mph). Strongest winds are expected to the north of the centre and in elevated areas.

 

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Dominica at 8am. Residents are advised to keep informed on the progress of this system and to remain vigilant. A deterioration in weather conditions is expected across Dominica as the morning progresses, increasing to pockets of moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and winds gusting to tropical storm force. Rough to very rough seas are expected up to Friday.  

 

Current rainfall amount projected for Dominica is between 6 to 8 inches (150 to 200mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas.

 

·         People in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be extremely vigilant and to exercise extreme caution as life threatening flash flooding and mudslides are expected today. A FLOOD WARNING is in effect for Dominica until 6pm Friday September 14, 2018.

 

·         Mariners and other users of the sea should remain extremely cautious. Large waves of up to 19.0ft and dangerous rip-currents will create unsafe conditions for small-craft operators. Sea-bathers should stay out of the water. Coastal flooding is possible in low-lying areas on eastern and northern coasts. A High-Surf Advisory and Small-Craft Warning are in effect until 6pm Friday September 14, 2018.

 

Note that there are no other systems posing an immediate threat to Dominica following Isaac.
