TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA AT 5:00 PM

TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA AT 5:00 PM…..ISAAC CONTINUES WESTWARD MOTION

 

                                                                

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area in less than 24 hours in this case.

 

At 5pm the centre of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 15.4 degrees north and longitude 56.6 degrees west or about 310 miles east of Dominica. Isaac is moving west at 21 mph (28 km/h). Maximum sustained winds remain near 60mph or 95km/h with higher gusts. Tropical storm force winds extend out to 175 miles (280km) from the centre.

 

Isaac has not changed much in the past several hours and its centre remains exposed. However, tropical storm force winds are still being observed. On the current forecast track, the centre of Isaac is expected to pass between Dominica and Guadeloupe by tomorrow afternoon, with tropical storm force winds (39-73mph). Strongest winds are expected in the northern quadrants of the system.

 

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Dominica at 5pm. Residents are advised to keep informed on the progress of this system and to remain vigilant. Preparations should by now be completed or rushed to completion. A deterioration in weather conditions is expected across Dominica late tonight, increasing to pockets of moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and winds gusting to tropical storm force by tomorrow. Rough to very rough seas are expected up to Friday.  

 

All users of the sea are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect life and property.

 

Current rainfall amount projected for Dominica is between 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas.

 

·         People in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be extremely vigilant and to exercise extreme caution as life threatening flash flooding and mudslides are possible from after midnight tonight. A FLOOD WARNING will be in effect for Dominica from 6pm this evening to 6pm Friday September 14, 2018.

 

·         Mariners and other users of the sea should remain extremely cautious. Large waves of 12.0 to 16.0ft and dangerous rip-currents will create unsafe conditions for small-craft operators. Sea-bathers should stay out of the water. Coastal flooding is possible in low-lying areas on east and northern coasts. A High-Surf Advisory and Small-Craft Warning will be in effect from 6pm this evening to 6pm Friday September 14, 2018.
